About Me

:// 1984-2003Before I delve into, what I think, are the fascinating details of my life, I think it would be most beneficial for you to get a brief geography lesson about my whereabouts for the past 21 years. I will then chronologically cover some of the other things that may have brought you to this page in the first place. My journey starts in the same place that almost every other person whose name happens to be Kirupa would start…India. I was born in Salem, India in 1984. Shortly thereafter, my parents and I moved to Italy where I learned to enjoy nice weather and friendly people. Ironic that I would find myself writing this in Cambridge/Boston where I am greeted by a frozen river outside. A few years later, my parents and I moved to Germany where I attended Kindergarten, and First and Second grade. With my education there, I learned how to speak and write German. More on that later! Shortly after finishing the second grade, in 1991, my parents and I moved to the USA. Unlike the major culture shock of having to learn a new language that I faced when living in Germany/Italy, almost everybody speaks English on this side of the Atlantic. In the end though, as of this writing, I seem to have settled comfortably at MIT in Cambridge and home with my parents in Spanish Fort (near Mobile), AL located near the Gulf of Mexico. Here is an aerial snapshot of Spanish Fort (click on image for full map): A combination of both geek/nerd and English can be a good thing. I started a little web site in 1999 covering random computer topics. Topics covered ranged from Windows to Office to Flash. Due to my writings on the web site, one of my more interesting activities was getting asked to write a book for McGraw-Hill. The events surrounding me writing the book are still puzzling to me, and thankfully my mind has suppressed all of the memories associated with me writing the 530 page book while still in high school. After 6 months of thinking, typing, re-typing, and consuming countless cans of Pepsi, the final product hit store shelves and online book retailers in the summer of 2001. The following is an action-shot of the actual book:
Your quest for finding the book may be slightly complicated because the book went out of print around the middle of 2003 – the same year I graduated from high school. A movie based on the book may be in the works, so keep on the lookout for a gripping historical thriller where 300 div tags face off against hordes of tables. :// 2003-2007: MITBefore attending MIT, I couldn't wait to get there. While at MIT, I couldn't wait to get out. Now that I have graduated from MIT, I feel like a boxer, who despite having had his wind knocked out too many times, was able to run out the clock and draw the match. I'm only half-joking. Overall, I had a great time, met a lot of extraordinary people, and gave in to peer pressure and started playing Halo 2 online. Officially, I majored in Computer Science and Engineering by taking the bare minimum number of classes required to graduate with that degree. Instead, I discovered and took many excellent classes in areas ranging from History; Economics; Political Science; Philosophy; Science, Technology, and Society (STS); and Management Science. Academics was only part of what I did. I was pretty active in dorm government and intramural sports. When I have the time, which is surprisingly often, I also attended interesting events in the Boston area such as movies, concerts (U2, Blue Man Group, etc.), comedy clubs, and more. Here is a picture of me at a dorm-event:
The last few paragraphs probably though don’t cover all the bases about me in a non-academic/distant sense, so here is an incoherent run-on sentence instead: I am a Christian; am mostly sane thanks to the sitcoms Everybody Loves Raymond and Seinfeld; would actually bet on Chuck Norris over a ninja any time; wish I had time to make kirupa.com standards compliant; believe the color blue to be vastly superior to all other colors; have met Bill Gates twice now; have yet to meet the person who signs off on all of my UPS packages that I receive almost weekly; have almost figured out why the caged bird sings; am a huge fan of the Bee Gees, U2, Corrs, Enigma, Enya, and Yanni; and finally, my main hobby, as my facebook profile states, is “mousing and keyboarding.” I also had time to keep my room very clean:
If you are curious to know more about me, you can check out my Facebook profile, my Xbox Live gamertag, or view my posts on the kirupa.com Forums. :// NowA few years ago, a mythical person named Lawrence Fishburne (or was it Morpheus that is make-believe?) offered me to choose between a blue pill and a red pill. I forgot which pill I took, but when I woke up, I found myself as an intern in Microsoft's CLR team where I did some stuff related to what became Silverlight. At the end of my internship, I interviewed with the Expression Blend team and graciously accepted their full-time offer. See my post titled I'm going to be a Microsoftie for details. It looks like I forgot to write about my primary hobby - kirupa.com. What started out as a few pages covering boring details about Windows and Office now spans hundreds of pages, thousands of e-mails, nearly one-hundred thousand members, millions of posts, and a lot of visitors and pageviews. So, that brings me to today, and I have no idea what it has in store for me. Cheers! |

You are an interesting person. I think that one of the reasons you succeed is your kindness and humility.
Of course my observation is based on what I read, and we all know the limitations of text. But still.
Keep up the good work.

If you (or anybody) is in Boston, feel free to drop by MIT and we can overcome the text-based limitation over a cup of coffee

Hello
I’m french and i’ve un big problem with flashdevelopping. I found no documentation for my problem and i hope you ‘ll help me
I have data stored in a file XML. And I installed XMLconnector which creates deltapacket in Xupdate format. (http://xmldb-org.sourceforge.net/xupdate/xupdate-wd.html)
I would like to see an example of file PHP, or ASP or Coldfusion (server-side language) which would treat this Xupdatepacket to modify and save my source file XML.
I saw many websites but I don’t know how include and integrate easily the xupdatepacket in a script PHP/ASP which would modify my xml
I did not still find any example concrete and simple.
Thank you

Hey –
your site has been a great help in learning Flash / bug fixes etc…
thanks for being there on the web.
October 11th, 2006 at 9:31 am
I just wanted to thank you for ALL of what you have shared through kirupa.com. It has really been a great blessing to me inspirationally as well as helped me on my job. I also wanted to say hello to you as a fellow Alabamian (if that’s a real word). I grew up partially in Birmingham. Anyways, I just wanted to say thank you and it really looks like you’re headed for even more success. Whatever you do don’t take down the site.
Hey, did you go to Hoover High school that is now on MTV? If so, what do you think of your alma mata and its super star status? ‘Nuff said, enjoy MIT and be blessed.

Hey man,
First I want to thank you for this excellent website. It’s really good!
Besides:
“have almost figured out why the caged bird sings” (written somewhere in “about me”)
That’s the title of a very cool song from Buckshot Lefonque =)
Cheers,
Jelmer

Dan – thanks for the nice comments.
MarkW – Always nice to meet a fellow Alabamian! I did go to the Hoover High School that is on MTV
Jelmer – I was referring more to the book by Maya Angelou, but right now, my recollection of both the book and your referenced song I have never heard are probably on the same level!

I was going over the site “Kirupa.com” and had a question about openging up a html file through a flash file. I have been trying to create a CD-rom with a flash navigation and then have it pop open a html file in a browser window. I used the code you have in one of your tutorials for a “pop-up window” but it gives me a message saying it’s not available. Maybe because it’s not a “http://” address. It’s local.
Any tips??
Thanks

hello,
i’m a photographer and i’m trying to build a very simple website with a flash presentation of my photos. however, i want to protect my images from being stolen. i was told there was no way to protect them if they are in a flash presentation. will your script do it? if not, how else can i protect the images? is there a way to prevent the flash from caching the images?
i was thinking of using html guardian from http://www.protware.com but they said they cannot protect flash presentations. only images from static pages.
i hope you can help. thanks in advance.

hey, kirupa, Do you think MIT would be a good choice for me(geek, coder,modder)? I put ananymous becouse if SOME PEOPLE *cough*esherido*cough* found out who is typing this, they would harass me for a while about actualy posting for once in about a year
but anyways, my cousin goes there and I am considering it!

You know, that is a question I get asked a LOT. I might make a blog posting about my experiences at MIT and what I think about it

Hi
I recently used your tutorial:
http://www.kirupa.com/developer/mx2004/xml_slideshow.htm
I really loved this. However I now have a need to include another feature. This is to create a fadeout/fade transition between the images as it cycles through the XML. At present the image just dissapears and a new one fades in, I need a transition between the two. I have played with the script but to no avail.
If you have any suggestions or any snippets of code I could just drop in to achieve this.
Thanks again for you help. Your website is great and I use it a lot.
thanks
Dave

Hi Kirupa,
Like most of the people who write to you, you dont know me. My name is Babul and I am writing from the UK.
I have been following your path through life (atleast online) since late 1999 when I first came across kirupa.com whilst at uni.
I liked the site then (I still have a http-rip of the site and its contents circa 2000, as back then internet was not all that fast or available and it was easier for people like me to rip sites and view them offline at lesuire) and enjoy it even more now.
I visit many websites online, but have only every followed the paths of yourself and another person called Scott Wainner (he setup another site I liked called sysopt.com).
I always looked for you guys every few months as you did concepts I thought of doing back then but never actually did (lol, I saw sites such as yours and decided not as you guys were already spending lots of time on the projects), and because you were both of a simalar age and background back then.
I was very pleased to read a few years ago that you got into MIT and was amazed how the one website changed your life (i.e. website = book = MIT …= Microsoft) and today felt compelled to write and congratulate you. WELL DONE!
I always wonder what would have happended if you never got the book deal (and how life would have changed for you), and am now wondering when your next book will come out! I look forward to it
Best regards,
Babul.

Hello Kirupa:
I’m a native of Namakkal near Salem. I studied in the Little Flower School in Salem in 1978-80 and completed my B.Sc in Chemistry in 1983 and Law in 1987. I’m a Patent and Trademarks Attorney in India and am double your age.
Strange that the Internet is enabling me to meet a person who is so competent and so young.
I wanted to give a link to your website from our website and the link at http://blog.kirupa.com/me/link.htm is not working.
Please fix it and email me with the code and we will give a link to your website.
Best wishes and May God Bless you,

I noticed you have some tutorials lurking around on flash perfection. Would you be interested in submitting tutorials on http://www.ScriptBum.com? You get your own profile, stats, one-way links to your site, etc.
Because we are a programming / design community and rely heavily on user input, we offer 30% of our profits each quarter to the top 10 most active users. Were fairly new so our profit is minimal, but with a steadily growing community we can really offer back to the users who make this community work.
Let me know what you think,
Gavin

Very nice tutorial site that I have reviewed and linked to for the use of my high school students as they learn Flash. I am impressed with your work that I had time to go through on this site. And I’m a big fan of MIT since my stepson is graduating from there in June (CS and AI).

Hi Kirupa,
Super good website and very interesting tutorials indeed.
I am currently working on flash MX and tried to follow the sliding menu tut of yours. I tried to create de sliding menu in a movie clip and the buttons and the background, along with the masking appears correctly but it doesn’t seem that the actionscripting is right because the buttons don’t seem functional (so it doesn’t slide at all…).
Could you please help me out with this problem ?
Thanks very much for your help!

Hello Kirupa,
My name is Han Erim. I’m a flash user and programmer. I wrote a new program with flash. It is really new and there is not a similar program on the web.
Your web site becomed an useful source and learning place for me until to day together. For that reason I’m offering a free copy of my program. I’m not sure you will need that program but this is possible.
You can see the program on the two web sites.

your website (a friend mentioned it lastnight) has been a breath of fresh life at my 79 years. I started trying to learn flash on my own 4 months ago, and have moved a few inches. I am trying to build simple practice drills in math. calculations and concepts in other subjects, and am facing problems – 1. keypress instead of mouseclick after answer input. mouse click works perfect, but all my attempts using keypress, KeyisDown, addlListener have not been suucesful. keypress gets added to the input answer and makes it wrong.
I spoke to a few in teaching institutes. They vocally appreciated my samples, but unable to help me with my problem.
You must be busy and 30 hour day insufficient. If you would permit me, I can send one of the files (.fla), will take you a few minutes. the file is on using formulae for calculations.
You are so full at 20+, and god bless. your website, like you, is simple and simply loaded with a wealth of info. my namaskarams to you and your parents.

gopinanth – I’m not sure I even know how to create a serverside FLV player!
rav – if you search the site, you’ll find some tutorials on how to use text fields and the various components.
fadjri – unfortunately, I don’t use friendster.

Hi, just wanted to say I’ve been reading your tutorials for a long time now and have found them incredibly usefull; however I have one question. I also have been creating a small (yet expanding) tutorial site for various different topics and would like to explain certain topics within Flash. However since I am new to this game I am concerned about using screen shots. So, I went on to Adobe’s website and searched for their guidelines. Apparently you aren’t allowed to use partial screen shots – can you just clarify this for me, as I’ve noticed you do use partial screen shots and I’d love to be able to do something similar.
Thanks in advance.
April 23rd, 2007 at 9:16 am
MattH – I never did quite that much research as you did on that topic. I just assumed that partial screenshots were OK =)
I haven’t received any e-mails from Adobe regarding the type of screenshots used on this site, for I’m sure, to them, the benefit of having a 3rd party community detailing their product outweighs a minor screenshot guideline.
April 23rd, 2007 at 10:00 am
Kirupa – many thanks for replying and my thoughts exactly! I have been reading up on the subject and feel that I am now being slightly pedantic but seeing as it’s my first site I’ve been unsure as to what’s “allowed” and what’s not.
As you say Adobe haven’t contacted you, and I have a friend who also writes his own tutorial site, again he’s never heard anything.
I guess I will be ok including partial screen shots =)
April 26th, 2007 at 2:35 pm
Thanks for keeping the site up! Thought I’d mention that a tutorial in the Flash 8 section has a bad link. “Smoke Effect Using Filters” doesn’t load.

I am in love with your site! Every time I am having some problem i enter your site first!
Where did you learn so much about flash?
You are the best and if i had a company i would hire you! i agree with Microsoft..
Nitzan.
May 8th, 2007 at 9:26 am
I’ve gained some needy nerdy flash experience via your site.
Thought I’d send a token of appreciation, just as many others have done, enthusiastically. I suppose “our” (referring to all those who have positively applauded you) enthusiasm stems from your own.
In my opinion, it is a shame that your genius is soon to be gobbled up by Microsoft. I guess you have your own good reason to want to join them… but why not KirupaSoft… the world awaits
May 8th, 2007 at 11:48 pm
Hi Kirupa,
This is Lenin from Chennai.I am learning from your site for more than two years – very excellent site. I am planning to attend some training in Action script 2.0 (OOPS). Can you (or others) suggest some good place for training? Do you handle any training session? Looking forward to hear from you.
May 9th, 2007 at 11:59 am
Nitzan – I vaguely rememember being aboard an underground submarine-like ship. There was somebody called Morpheus who was installing various software through a cable attached to the back of my neck. Besides various forms of martial arts, I think Flash may have been one of the things that got installed.
Prem – if you can manage to extend the average day from 24 hours to 36 hours, I’ll definitely have time for not only Microsoft and kirupa.com, but also KirupaSoft
Lenin – I don’t know any programs, but many do exist. You may want to post on the forums, for many there have attended various training programs.

Your website is inspirational. Inspite of all the junk that is available on the net at the click of a button, I have often found my answers only at Kirupa, be it PHP or Flash. I think the joy of your website is how uncluttered and simplistic it really is and how organized the content is. Keep up the good work and don’t fall into the trap of having useful content fighting for eyeballs with the real thing! Cheers!

I am amazed at your website and take a lot of help from here. I think you are a super brain guy.
I have a question on the following tutorial Launching a Centered Pop-Up Window
http://www.kirupa.com/developer/mx/centered_popup.htm
I have Windows vista and flash 8. When I play the movie, IE gives me the following error: IE cannot download. Unspecified error.
This is so frustrating as I am a novice in flash and am actually trying to build some flash with mouse over pop up window. I thought the centered pop up window tutorial would work as well, except that I get that error. Now, could you please please help me. I am building a PPT style presentation and need that mouse over pop up window on a slide. Thanks…Adelina Srinivasan

I made an interactive map using your hover captions tutorial. But my problem is the caption boxes on the edge of the map exceed the stage so you cant see them.
How do you keep this from happening?
if you would like to see the map its at http://www.terraproperties.net/plotmap.html
this is the code i have which i only slightly modified from the tutorial.
captionFN = function (showCaption, captionText, captionText2, captionText3, captionText4, captionText5, captionText6, bName) {
if (showCaption) {
_root.createEmptyMovieClip(”hoverCaption”, this.getNextHighestDepth());
cap.desc.text = captionText;
cap.desc2.text = captionText2;
cap.desc3.text = captionText3;
cap.desc4.text = captionText4;
cap.desc5.text = captionText5;
cap.desc6.text = captionText6;
cap._width = 191
cap._alpha = 98;
//
if(cap._x+cap._width>Stage.width){
cap._x=Stage.width-cap._width;
} else {
xo = -90;
yo = -157;
}
hoverCaption.onEnterFrame = function() {
cap._x = _root._xmouse+xo;
cap._y = _root._ymouse+yo;
cap._visible = true;
};
} else {
delete hoverCaption.onEnterFrame;
cap._visible = false;
}
};

Hi Kirupa
i was on your website to know how to create a flash dynamic gallery, I downloaded the file but I cant open it with my Trial version of Flash MX. It says that the format of the file is unexpected (?). What can I do about it? I tried to domnload the version for Flash 2004 and it s the same.
Ur explanations are clear and well structured but without the flash tutorial it s a nightmare for me!
thx!

June 28th, 2007 at 10:18 pm
Hi Cristina – it maybe that the tutorials are for Flash 8 or even Flash CS3. The best thing would be to download the trial version of CS3 from http://www.adobe.com.
Flash has decent backwards compatbility with older FLAs, so you can easily open any tutorial file using Flash CS3.
Cheers!

Just wondering if you would be able to look at a Flash project that I tried to do and won’t work. I went through your sliding menu tutorial with success and then tried some simple modifications to make my own and now it won’t work. Just wondering if you would have a quick moment to look it over and tell me where I goofed up. Thank you for your time.
July 2nd, 2007 at 6:47 pm
Hi Kirupa,
I have a few questions concerning your Sliding Menu tutorial:
1) I have 10 images of 472 x 352 to be part of the sliding menu, however Flash MX2004 does not allow me to place more than 6 images of that size. What can I do?!
Before I ask my 2nd question, it would be preferal if you understood the functionality of my buttons. Here how it works:
Little squares with a thin border contains 2 digits –01, 02, 03, …, 10– and on rollOver the squares filles in.
Now the question is…
2) How can I maintain the active button stay filled in depending which button I rolled-over to
AND
the corresponding 2 digits would show up bigger somewhere else on the stage??
*Do you get what I mean? =|
——————————-
Previously, I had my images fade in (Fading Grid tutorial), which I had the image, the button filled in & the bigger digits corresponding the button all in one movie clip.
I had 10 of them, which are all triggered by their frame label.
Now, I don’t think I can have them in the same movie clip as the image sliding in bcx it wouldn’t be nice to see.
Would you be able to help me find a solution? Thank you for your time!
July 2nd, 2007 at 9:43 pm

I was wondering if you have a tutorial of this exact form?
Thx

Hi Kirupa,
As I am new to flash and found your simple text animation tutorial easy to follow, I have a question relating to this. What do I have to do so that the animation does not loop – that is I want my text to animate once so that I can include it into a html page?
Appreciate if you could reply to my question at duke0608@bigpond.net.au
Cheers,

Kirupa,
How are you? I hope all is well. I have a comment about your artcle entitled Install Your Own PHP Server w/ Apache I don’t think its right. There is a problem with the configuration process of the httpd.conf file for Integrating PHP into Apache. I managed to install
apache_2.2.4-win32-x86-no_ssl.msi
php-5.2.3-Win32.zip
I followed all your instructions. I do not know what’s going on. I do get the server to read the index.html page within c:\web\htdocs, but the rest escapes me.
If you can help me on this I’d appreciate it.
Thanks,
Camilo

Hi Kirupa,
I downloaded your fla file: “Create a Photo Gallery” posted on kirupa.com.

please assist if you can.

Very impressive information on you. I enjoyed reading it. Your web site on Flash as well. I’m self learning Flash person, but am still struggling in some fields.

I saw your example of doing something similar using dynamic input fields. How would this example change is you were to use drop-downs and radio buttons)?
Thanks,
Amy

I just wanted to thank you for doing what you do. For myslef and others out there who are newbies to Flash, your tutorials really have helped. You did not have to do it but you have done it, and with great success. I have showed your sight to several of my friends and it truly has been helpful in many ways. People could learn from your generosity.
Thanks,

Your site is as always a wealth of information and it was essentially what got me on my way to becoming a flash developer at the start of 2007 — a role which I’m now doing full-timel (having moved away from webdev and technical programming). I couldn’t be happier than to have discovered Flash; it’s the tool a hybrid designer/programmer like myself has always longed for!
Kudos for a learning resource par excellence and let us know how MS treats ya!

Hi Kirupa,
I would like to say thank you for your wonderful work on the Kirupa.com. I am a web/flash designer from Aust and have been using your site for many years.
Just a quick question, i am thinking of starting an e-Commerce site. How can i attract advertisers to put ads on my site? The number of advertisers on your site has grown significantly over the years and i just wonder how you achieve that?
thanks for your input
regards
John

You aren’t going to like my answer haha.
For the most part, advertisers directly approach me. That only works if you are willing to take time creating great content with a focus on your users….for the next 8 years!

Kirupa,
I’ve learned alot about XML and flash from your site, thanks for that. Its a much better resource than the other sites I have found on the net. I’ll be referencing it often, keep the tutorials up! Being a CSS/XHTML guy, flash is my weak point, and your site helped get past that.

Hey bro, im from New Zealand, and let me start by just saying…this is my ultimate tutorial resource – thanks for making such a wonderful website!
What i came on to say is, i was doing a tutorial (Adding Thumbnails) and when i clicked ‘next page’ there was no longer any pages…http://www.kirupa.com/developer/mx2004/thumbnails.htm
Id really like to be able to use the tutorial…is there anything you can do?
November 26th, 2007 at 2:34 am
Hello Kirupa,
Thank you for your really goodwork. I don’t know if you have time for answer technical questions.
I’m trying to make a site with several cascading menus (Actionscript 2.0).
It’s the first time I’m working with XML. I’m trying to extract my database data (MySQL) and format it in a valid XML file (I read the tutorial in your website).
I have to tables : ‘author’ and ‘works’. I’d like to execute an imbricated request : for each author, i’d like to extract his works. (The fields author.firstname and works.author are the same.)
I wrote this code but it doesn’t work :
Thank you for your help,
Raphaël

Hi Kirupa,
First I would like to thank you for your tutorials and other advice, it’s very useful and I noticed that any time I am searching anything related to flash on the web your site pretty much always comes up the first one on the Google search page.
I am a beginner in Flash, my first nature is Graphic Design for printing. recently I started using Flash and presently trying to do a Christmas Card to send out to my clients.
As you probably guessed I would like to put some snow in it… I used your Flash Snow 3.0 tutorial, works great, the only problem is that when I put a preloader before the snow and I move the snow to the second frame it stops working (no snow at all) and if I put the snow on the first frame (always on it’s own layer) together with the preloader (always on it’s own layer) the card is very slow to open and the preloader won’t show up till the very end (about 85%) together with the snow. I noticed that in all examples I found the action (with the code for snow) is always on the first frame, is this the only way to do this?
Can you please help me, because I really hate it when there is something I can’t overcome (it’s like a puzzle not solved, it won’t let me rest…)
Thank you very much again and keep up the great work you are very talented in what you do!
December 19th, 2007 at 4:13 pm
Hi, thanks for the scrolling text, you saved me a lot of time!!!, but i have a question..I did it 3 times already and the scrolldown button is ok, but when i press the scrollup, it goes all the way up to the top, as if i was keeping it pressed!

Hi Kirupa,
You something really awesome thanks for your help in asp.net+ sql its very easy and i had never seen before like this tutorials its really amazing but i didn’t got the end result in the 5th page of your tutorials you told that
” Note – Copy/Paste SqlDataSource Control
You could have bypassed all of the above steps by copying the SqlDataSource control from your Games.aspx and pasting it into your Results.aspx. With your SqlDataSource control displayed, your Choose Data Source drop-down menu will contain the name of your SqlDataSource. Selecting that is all you would really need to do.”
its lit bit confusing what i have copy and paste please reply me kirupa

hello kirupa,
iv been working with Flash for about 5-8 months now, and i think im pretty advanced. Your site taught me most of what i know! now, i would like you to share some more of your knowledge at my teams forum! it wont require much time, all we do is post our own tutorials and comment/correct other peoples tutorials. we have plenty of members, but unfortunately i dont think we are as advanced as you in allot of coding… which is why im asking you to join and post at least 1-2 tutorials..
this is merely a suggestion, i understand if you are too busy to post/make any tutorials, but if you ever have time… please do!
the website is http://squadcoding.freeforums.org
we would even be happy if you just joined, no tutorials are required!

I would be very thankful too you if you do that so.
Assessments might consist of

3) Drag and Drop (with equal and unequal no of targets)
4) Match the pair.
5) Drop Down.
6) True and False (both single and multiple)
And other on which you may have worked on. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I have been looking around kirupa.com for a while now, lookiing through the forums and tutorials. I am trying to do an image map, with flash, which is something I have never done before. I came across this link (http://www.kirupa.com/lab/kville/index.htm) attached to something else. Is there a tutorial as to how I can do something like that? The link under “website” shows what I have so far. But I like yours better because its neater. Also, with the way you have the little window coming up with the link, is it possible to put a picture there with the text? Kinda like I have, but.. better.
I looked for a direct email addy, but couldn’t find one. I’m sorry to hog your comments with this question.

Hi Kirupa,
I know u must be very busy, I have what I think is a pretty basic AS3 question…nobody seems to have time to help so I was wondering if you would?. well here goes…
I have a group of display objects being created by the array.length, adding is no problem… but when I remove when using splice() i always have a gap! or hole… I can see the array is sparse and contains an Int where the deleted item was. But how on earth do I update the array? and get it to fall in line?.
example:
for(var i:int; i < array.length; i++){
//create some object based on ‘i’
//ok, now on click remove an item 1 in array,
//I get item, A HOLE!, an item. [0],1,[2]
Please can u help me?
Best, jon

Do keep up the good work, and love the website.
Will definitely be back soon to read up the rest of it.

Kirupa, Kirupa, Kirupa…
What can I say that hasn’t been said already!
Your content has helped so many flowering developers…your eagerness to simply GIVE away this knowledge is inspiring. I Know that it takes a lot of hard work to create and maintain this information and you do it with ease.
I’m no longer doing web/flash design and have transitioned to Business Analysis and Project Mgmt, but I definately miss combing thru your site and learning learning learning everything about everything you talk about.
Eternally greatful and best wishes!!

Hi kirupa,
I made flash countdown till 02.04.2009 but the timing is now 106 days (have to be 73 days…) When do mistake?
my actionscript is:
this.onEnterFrame = function() {
var today:Date = new Date();
var currentYear = today.getFullYear();
var currentTime = today.getTime();
var targetDate:Date = new Date(2009,02,04);
var targetTime = targetDate.getTime();
var timeLeft = targetTime – currentTime;
var sec = Math.floor(timeLeft/1000);
var min = Math.floor(sec/60);
var hrs = Math.floor(min/60);
var days = Math.floor(hrs/24);
sec = string(sec % 60);
if (sec.length < 2) {
sec = “0″ + sec;
}
min = string(min % 60);
if (minc.length < 2) {
min = “0″ + min;
}
hrs = string(hrs % 24);
if (hrs.length < 2) {
hrs = “0″ + hrs;
}
days = string(days);
var counter:String = days + “:” + hrs + “:” + min + “:” + sec;
time_txt.text = counter;
}
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!

Hi, Great site.
I’m TOTALLY new to flash so please excuse me…
Ive just finished using your “Create Falling Snow” tutorial.
Which is working great except that I want it to snow behind other graphics on the design.
I have positioned the Layer with the action code on below everything else except the background layer but this makes no difference.
I REALLY would appreciate your help as I am a complete novice but it’s all my design is missing now.
Thanks

Is there any idea to come back to India and work for India…
December 19th, 2008 at 2:54 am
Hey!!
And sooo well explained!
Many times dropped by your website looking for solutions for my bad AS coding and little knowledge… but always being enlightened by the contents in here!
So now that I read your information… why do caged birds sing??
I have a friend, Marc, who was at the MIT for a year or so and told me about a good friend there… by his description, had the silly sense that “maybe” could be you. Not the first time for curious “2nd-degree” links!!
All the best and thank you for your very helpful and generous site!
Jimena, from the Spanish country
PS: have read enough of Douglas Coupland so… please, don’t become a Microserf! ;D
December 22nd, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Wow – so many comments to look through!
Sathish – I do speak Tamil, but despite having been born in India, I don’t have too many ties to it. Me actually living in India will be more foreign to me than living at home in the US
Jimena – I’m not a microserf…yet! I don’t remember meeting someone whose name was “Marc”, so there is a good chance I may not be the 2nd-degree link.

Hello Kirupa,
Its really nice to see a website which is dedicated to flash, and your tutorials are awesome.
I am actually in a process of making a family Tree. I have tried my hand in xml, and I am kind of getting the feel of it. I tried some of your examples using xml in flash, but I am not able to create a movie, or even get the names of my family tree on the swf output.
Ideally I would like to have something like the one on this website( http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/kennedys/sfeature/sf_tree.html ), minus the photos. I even downloaded the file, and tried reverse engineering using SWF decompiler, but looks like most of the stuff is “hard coded” including the background layout.
I didnt know where else to go for help. I am sure you would know a better way of creating the same with xml and of course lot more simplified.
Keep up the good work !!!
Thanks

It was great meeting you at MIX! We met at the Ascentium party. I wanted to stop by kirupa.com and check out the latest and greatest and I noticed a TON of new information on Blend/Silverlight and Blend/WPF! That’s very exciting to see, especially since I was telling you about a lack of resources on the web for exactly that.
keep up the good work.
Cheers,

Hey Kirupa,
Your site is awesome, I love your tutorials and how easy they are. I know this probably isn’t the right place, but I have just a simple question on the xml flash gallery, how would I add a link to the xml file and have it show up within the field?
Thanks,

Dear Mr. Kirupa,
I am using one of your scripts at the following link:
http://www.okibiz.com/kana/testmail.html
The text sends and receives in “English” just fine, but I need it to work with “Japanese” text.
In short I will need the script to keep the “Unicode” without transposing it back. Japanese text is able to be entered in the message, but on the mail reception it comes out garbled. I am going off of the “Flash mail” tutorial off of one of your sites.

Hi Chinnathambi! I’d like to thank you for your photo gallery tutorial. It has helped me a lot. I’m hoping that maybe you can clarify a few things about this project as well as perhaps help me with some added functionality I’d like to implement. Well, first, the slideshow works great. I’ve got a few problems, though. First, I’ve tried to have php generate the xml code to select the nodes from mysql database fields and it hasn’t been working. So, maybe you can help me with that? I’ll post the code:
<?PHP
$link = mysql_connect (”*****host”, “username”, “password”);
mysql_select_db (”testdb”);
$query = ‘SELECT * FROM table’;
$results = mysql_query($query);
echo “\n”;
while ($line = mysql_fetch_assoc($results)) {
echo “\n”;
echo “{$line["image"]}\n”;
echo “{$line["caption"]}\n”;
echo “{$line["description"]}\n”;
echo “\n”;
}
mysql_close($link);
?>
Why wouldn’t this work? Strange.
Another thing is that I’d like to add a download button so that people could download the currently displayed image. Is this at all possible?
Please respond as the success of my project sort of depends on it.
Thanks in advance!
May 22nd, 2009 at 7:13 pm
hmmm…seems some of my code didn’t display. if you email me i can send you my source files.

Where can I go to download the files you mentioned in the book with the URLs to download them. They are not there any more.

Hi Kirupa,
i’ve just been teaching myself to use expression blend and your tutorials rock. I have however got stuck on one point regarding DependencyProperty.
I created a glassbutton with a textbox in it. But I’m unable to expose the textbox or it’s content property to an application. The problem i think is that the textbox does not sit on the control but deep inside the Buttons control template.
Can it still be accesses through code, and more importantly how ?
Regards
Josef

Hi Kirupa,
Just starting to get into website design and found your script on forms to be just what I needed. I’ve found a few others but yours was easily explained and also seems very simple to use.
Thank you for putting all of your hints and tips out there for beginners like me. I’ve bookmarked this site and I’m sure i’ll be back here looking for lots more ideas over the coming months.

Hi there,
I’ve just started using flash, and I found your excellent guide for making a custom scrollbar. The tutorial worked fine, but when following your instructions to create a scrollbar on my own website, and error seems to have sprung up.
When I test the movie, the scrollface starts halfway down the scrollbar and ends up off the track until it stops. I’m not using up or down arrows, and instead going for a thin scrollbar.
Do you know of anyway I can get this working?
Thanks,
Liam

Hi Kirupa,
I am very new to Flash and untrained. Like many others, I discovered your tutorials and found them very helpful – and I appreciate and thank you for what you’re doing. I’ve just used your “Create a Photo Gallery” tutorial, coded by sbeener and it works great. Is there a way to modify this code (or another tutorial) to show how to access more than one gallery (set of pictures) within the Flash file? The other galleries could use a different set of buttons. Again, thanks for your helpful work.

Man, I am no one to praise you. You are at the sky. But I just wanted to ask you one thing.
Do you know TAMIL(as you went abroad right after birth)? Are you doing any good for the language?
You people with all such talents should make extra ordinary contributions to the language. That’s my request.
Keep up the good work. A lot of people here are stunned at your tutorial works. You are amazing.

After reading a couple of your tutorials, i was very much eager to message you and i am here. I’m surprised to see more than 350 + comments. Even though my comment would be a tiny drop among em. I really adore the way you explained the law of physics on the object falling down!! hats offf.
I used to wonder why i have to learn all those(laws of gravity coz.. i thougt i wiill not implement it any way) when i was in school.. now i see the practical implementation. Probably this is one of the greatest lesson of my life. Learn evry thing that comes in my way.
YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!

The current version crashes on Arrage in Grid with 2000 high res images and I was hoping it may have been fixed.

Hi Kirupa,
I really liked your tutorial:
Dynamic Mouse Trail in Flash
http://www.tutcity.com/view/dynamic-mouse-trail-in-flash.22655.html
I’m just a newbie with Flash. Just getting started in ActionScript 3. Is it possible to get the same effect using a keyboard event or a timer event on a movie clip, instead of a mouse event?
I have code that works pretty well for keyboard events and timer events, but I can’t get them to work with the “dynamic mouse trail effect”.
Thanks! Keep up the good work.

Hi raman,
Glad to see the information was useful to you. I currently do not sell any of the content, but you are more than welcome to make a CD of that simulation yourself and distribute it.
All of the examples on the site on the site are free for anyone to use in whatever way they see fit. The only things on the site I do not allow reproducing without permission is the actual text and explanation.
Cheers,
Kirupa =)
